Apply For A Government Grant: 5 Things To Look Out For When Applying For A Grant
Government cash grants are definitely a great way to get the money that you need, which is why so many apply for a government grant each year. For students, small business owners, and just about everyone else out there, government grants are essentially free money that will help you to meet your goals and get the life that you want to live.
However, when you are looking about for government grants, there are a few things that you should be on the lookout for. Here is some information about each of the five main things you should keep your eye out for.
1. Should You Pay Money to Apply for a Grant?
One definite thing to keep an eye out for would be scams that appear to be grant applications, but actually are just ways to make money for less than scrupulous individuals. The truth is that grants from the government do not require you to fork over your hard-earned money, especially since they are usually focused on helping people out who don’t have a lot of money to begin with! You should be skeptical of any grant that wants you to give them money just to apply.
2. Why Does This Grant Require My Bank Information?
Another popular scam that those who are wanting to apply for a government grant or private grants should be keenly aware of is when a supposed grant (no matter what type it is) seems like a ploy to get your bank information. In those cases, it usually is just that. What happens in these situations is that the person contacting you about your winning the “grant” will inform you that for whatever reason, they can’t pay you by check.
They will explain that they instead need to deposit the money to your bank account directly. It should go without saying that no legitimate grant will require such information! This is a definite red flag for what is known as a “phishing” scam.
3. Will They Write My Application for Me?
There are reputable websites out there (such as National Grant Secrets) that will provide assistance and tips for how to properly apply for a grant (and how to increase your success of getting one), but most reputable services in this area will not actually write your application for you. If it sounds too good to be true in that respect, it probably is!
4. Should I Pay to Ensure I Win the Grant?
Other folks will insist that you will be assured that you will win a certain grant- if you fork over some dough. Again, other than a flat cost for helping you find grants or helping you to improve your government grants application, you shouldn’t be paying anything to find grants and apply for them. Furthermore, there are no reputable grants that will guarantee a winner simply by selecting the highest bidder!
5. Other Things to Look Out For
There are some other red flags to be watchful for, too. Some scammers will say that you won “a portion” of a grant, and ask you for your bank information to distribute that portion to you. Also, on the non-scam related side of things, you should be prepared to double-check alleged government grants with the official listings that are available on the internet to make sure they are authentic! If you follow these tips, you will be better off when you apply for a government grant.
